How to Antidote Homeopathic Remedies

Disclaimer: this pertains to traditionally accepted homeopathic principles and does not constitute medical advice. Please see full disclaimer.

There are certain substances which are thought to cancel out, or otherwise “antidote” remedies in homeopathy.

This would mean that the energetic effect the remedy is having on your body would basically stop.

If you were having a proving to a remedy (see post: What is a Homeopathic Proving?) this can then perhaps come as good news.

However, if you are trying to get an active benefit from a remedy then…well, not so much.

So what are these antidotes?

The biggest thing known to antidote a remedy is coffee, black coffee in particular.

Before you worry though about being able to take both remedies and your daily cups of coffee, I personally drink like 3 to 4 cups per day – and I take homeopathic remedies.

I have personally found that as long as you space it out, then you don’t really need to worry so much.

I’m sure that there are more purists out there who think that you cannot have any at all, but I follow more of the mindset of the great Miranda Castro, and what she said to say on the matter on her website here: The Vexed Question of Antidotes.

I will add however as an update to the original post, that there are some remedy states that inherently cannot likely have any coffee at all: particularly Nux Vom & Hydrogenium.

Other items that are known for antidoting that you may want to space out as well are mint, tea tree oil, oregano oil, eucalyptus oil, etc – basically any of the very strong essential oils, anything with a very strong flavor/smell profile, etc.

Do be mindful however that there are even homeopathic remedies that can cancel, or antidote each other as well.

This a really great chart that I found that I highly recommend printing, as not only does it show what can antidote, but also the various relationships of remedies. (See chart: Relationship of Remedies)

Ultimately though, if you were deriving a benefit from a remedy and accidentally canceled it out, going by what I discussed in the post on dosing, (see post: When to Take a Dose in Homeopathy) if the symptoms were there you could simply then just take another.
